Part 1
When the Christmas Lights Go Out
The purpose of the wilderness is to escape Babylon , separate from the world, and avoid the enemy who has usurped control of this earth because Adam and Eve took the fruit from his hand. That had to happen so that this could become the atonement earth it was meant to be. The wilderness also separates the wheat from the chaff. To come out of the wilderness, temples must be raised, people must be redeemed. This people, standing in holy places, will be the first step; the spiritual fulfillment of establishing a city set on a hill to be a light unto the world.1 As can be seen on the heading at the top of this Fireside page, we each need to be a kindled fire, lit by Christ, and then send sparks out to the world. This way, when the prophesied darkness descends, the honest in heart will have a light to guide them to the Tree of Life.
For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: But the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
Through great trial, the members of the Church will come through as diamonds from the furnace of affliction and be prepared for the blessings of Adam-Ondi-Ahman. Then, finally, a portion will be chosen to return to the center place and physically build the Zion they have spiritually prepared for. The temples that President Gordon B. Hinckley has caused to be built are fast bringing this Church out of the wilderness. The hard truth is that this displeases the Adversary and there will be a fight for dominion of the earth. The good news is that this must happen for the Second Coming to be ushered in.
Now that the framework has been laid in previous articles, it is time to put the pieces into their places. This article will first take a look at the role of the children of Joseph in the last days. Next, an introduction to the significance of the year 2012 will be offered. Finally, how it ties in with Aquarius and the outpouring of both knowledge from God, and wrath from Satan.
A Prophet Speaks
When the new tribe of Israel was in danger of destruction through starvation, God raised up Joseph to feed his brethren; saving their lives. As discussed in Into the Wilderness, in the last days another Joseph was raised up to feed Israel. In Kirtland, having brought back the keys for the restoration of the tribes of Israel , Moses gave Joseph Smith the means to accomplish the spiritual rebirth of Israel, the temple. The young tribe of the rebirth would be in grave danger of starvation without the sustenance provided by the latter-day Joseph. This is the role of the descendants of Joseph of Egypt in the last days.
Taking a look at two of the Conferences addresses of our prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, a very interesting detail emerges. The prophet made it clear he was not making a specific prophecy and we will take him at his word. Yet, we feel a nudge from the Lord to prepare when we notice that President Hinckley mentioned the seven years of plenty and seven years of famine in the time of Joseph of Egypt. There were exactly seven years between the two talks. Following are excerpts from President Hinckley's Conference Addresses beginning with October 1998:
To the Boys and to the Men (October General Conference, 1998)
I am suggesting that the time has come to get our houses in order.
I wish to speak to you about temporal matters. As a backdrop for what I wish to say, I read to you a few verses from the 41st chapter of Genesis. Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt , dreamed dreams which greatly troubled him. The wise men of his court could not give an interpretation. Joseph was then brought before him:
"Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river: "And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow: "And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and leanfleshed. . . . "And the lean and the ill favoured kine did eat up the first seven fat kine: . . . "And I saw in my dream . . . seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good: "And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them: "And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: . . . "And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, . . . God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do. "The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one. . . .". . . What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh. "Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt : "And there shall arise after them seven years of famine. ". . . And God will shortly bring it to pass" (Gen. 41:17-20, 22-26, 28-30, 32).
Now, brethren, I want to make it very clear that I am not prophesying, that I am not predicting years of famine in the future. But I am suggesting that the time has come to get our houses in order.
Here are excerpts from the prophet's address, exactly seven years later:
If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear (Oct. General Conference, 2005)
We can so live that we can call upon the Lord for His protection and guidance. . . . We cannot expect His help if we are unwilling to keep His commandments.
Someone has said it was not raining when Noah built the ark. But he built it, and the rains came. The Lord has said, "If ye are prepared ye shall not fear" (D&C 38:30). The primary preparation is also set forth in the Doctrine and Covenants, wherein it says, "Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come" (D&C 87:8).
We can so live that we can call upon the Lord for His protection and guidance. This is a first priority. We cannot expect His help if we are unwilling to keep His commandments. We in this Church have evidence enough of the penalties of disobedience in the examples of both the Jaredite and the Nephite nations. Each went from glory to utter destruction because of wickedness.
We have built grain storage and storehouses and stocked them with the necessities of life in the event of a disaster. But the best storehouse is the family storeroom. In words of revelation the Lord has said, "Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing" (D&C 109:8). Our people for three-quarters of a century have been counseled and encouraged to make such preparation as will assure survival should a calamity come.
Let us never lose sight of the dream of Pharaoh concerning the fat cattle and the lean, the full ears of corn, and the blasted ears; the meaning of which was interpreted by Joseph to indicate years of plenty and years of scarcity (see Genesis 41:1-36).
In the last days, the tribe of Joseph has been given the edict to feed the Lord's sheep. We cannot help others unless we have sustenance ourselves. This applies both physically and spiritually. When the prophet first spoke of Pharaoh's dream, the United States and much of the world was living in a time of general prosperity. There have been events that have chipped away at that prosperity, yet many are still in a position to prepare. Since we are not qualified nor authorized to cry that the sky is going to fall on a certain date, we will focus instead on the spiritual preparation.
The prophet encouraged us to fill our family granaries. Hopefully, we have all done that and we will have bread to sustain life. Now for the second seven years, partially lapsed, maybe we should focus on filling our jars with water, both physically, and spiritually. That water of knowledge and power will be necessary to sustain life. Anyone who reads much of Nibley, learns that water and light go together. Many ancient drawings show goddesses pouring out a jar of water while another pours out oil. It may be a good time to make sure our lamps are filled with oil. As we learned in the last article, Out of the Wilderness , the Festival of the Tabernacles celebrated the gathering in of the harvest. They who gathered the harvest built a bowery, (a booth of evergreen branches) to protect the fruits of their labors and their family from the elements. They celebrated by drawing water from the sacred well, and lighting candelabras.2

elect and birthright blessed,
despised by his brethren.
Jealous of the coat
when obedient he came,
they conspired and cast him
struggling and stripped

2012 and the Mayans
Seven years and two months after the prophet's last address regarding Joseph of Egypt, a very important astronomical event will occur. That will be the month the Mayan Long Calendar ends, believed by most astronomers to be the beginning of a new cycle. Hugh Nibley wrote: "Each of the great dispensations of the gospel has come in a time of world upheaval. When the waywardness of the human race has been matched by a climactic restlessness of the elements."3 Remember, in the seven years of famine in Egypt , things did not get severe immediately. We are not predicting a famine in the next few years. We are suggesting there will be blessings from obedience to the prophet. Also, since no man knows when the foretold events will come, it is always better to be prepared before it is everlastingly too late. Some areas of the world and even our country have already seen the benefits of being prepared. We shuddered a little in concern when shortly after Katrina devastated New Orleans, we heard a woman in a very wealthy ward bear her testimony. She was filled with gratitude that they were so righteous in their stake that they did not need fear anything like Katrina happening to them.
Many members of the Church were expecting events to become more intense right at the year 2000 mark. When Christ came the first time, the Jews in general, did not know a great event had happened. The first inkling of the Master Teacher who had come among them was felt twelve years after the Savior was born. The great doctors of learning were astonished at the young boy's words at the temple. Twelve is the age that boys receive the priesthood. It may very well be that the world will not notice the coming and going of the 2012 Winter Solstice, twelve years after the turning of the century, but that does not mean the event of a new age is insignificant. Some may feel uncomfortable at any mention of something that smacks of New Age beliefs. It is crucial not to throw out truths because others have a small fragment of that truth along with many erroneous beliefs.
The astronomical facts and Pueblo Indian lore we will refer to in the following section comes from: Natural Law and Navajo Religion/Way of Life, April 21, 1995.
The Mayans accurately mapped the date of Dec. 21, 2012 for the conjunction of the sun's elliptic path with the horizontal dark path (space dust darkens the stars along that path) that runs through the center of the Milky Way. The Mayans were very scientific in their methods. For instance, they calculated the lunar synodic cycle to be 29.53086 days. Modern science corrects the number to 29.53059 days. Mayans believed the gravitational pull of the sun, moon and 5 major planets effect the earth. This is an ancient belief widely held and why the days of the week are named from those seven bodies. On the above date, the Mayan calendar stops. In addition, the Mayans, who have correctly calculated major astronomical events in their long count calendar, pinpointed May 5, 2000 as the end of the fifth sun and birth of the sixth sun. Mayan calendar tells that on May 5, 2000 was the first time in 6,000 years that all the planets were aligned.
The Mayans venerated the Milky Way. They believed it to be the place of birth for all life. Some of the terms associated with it are; 'four', 'serpent', or 'sky'. What they call the dark river that runs horizontally through the Milky Way was also called the World Tree, or the Crossroads. Their most common names for the elliptical crossing of the sun with the dark river were; the 'Tree of Life', the 'Cross', and the 'Door'. This dark river was believed to be the Road to the Underworld, called Xibalba Be. It was sometimes called "the Black Road ." They believed this road figures prominently in the story of the Hero Twins defeating Darkness. Those twins guarding the sun and taking part in the new birth, brings to mind figures 22 and 23 in Fac. 2. Before the initiate finishes his journey, he/she has one last crossroad to pass. The crocodile god of Pharaoh in Fac. 1, challenges the initiate before they cross the river to come into the presence of God. In spite of the renewal that takes place with the coming of new cycles, the Native Americans feel it is an especially worrisome time since the forces of creation and chaos will face off to do battle.
The rare alignment that will happen during the December solstice, 2012, will move the sun into conjunction with the great bulge "the pregnant Xquic" of the Milky Way and heralds the end of one World Age and the birth of the next. As women know, birth pangs can be difficult.
When the winter solstice sun passes through the birth canal of the Milky Way, it will usher in the beginning of a new great cycle of time, a resetting of the great celestial star-clock of precession . Many cultures from all over the world believe this union could announce an unprecedented shift in both civilization and human consciousness. The Navajos believe that metaphorically, the winter solstice sun represents the beginning of the return journey to the life-giving warmth of summer. Could this be the beginning of the return journey of earth to Kolob?4 The Native Americans believe we now live in a time when earth/ life's energy is slower, in fact at its lowest point. At the new age, they believe the embers of a new life will stir and will burst forth born anew. They write that life will die and be resurrected, noting that this is a Christian concept. In fact, they connect this with the many world religions who believe the winter solstice to be a period of holiness, honored by ceremonies and festivals. This concept is the subject of our next article.
The Mayans believed the earth's energy will decline as it nears and hits 2012, then burst forth in a new cycle. For more that we have written on this subject, including some disturbing scientific speculation, go to the information titled "The Mayan Calendar Ends" above the footnotes. We wanted to keep the article from being too heavy and have separated that paper for those who are interested.
A Look at the Scriptures
Let's take a look at the three most common terms the Mayans used when referring to the end of the age:
"Door" was one of the names the Mayans used to describe this elliptic crossing. Jesus declared that He is the door: "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture."5 The whole fourth chapter of Revelation is very pertinent here, especially the first verse: "After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter."
A quick look at a few Hebrew words gives amazing insight. Notice in the above verse that the door opened and there was a voice as a trumpet. Take a look at words from the same root: trumpet, midnight, divide, cross, road, river. Here is another grouping looking at midnight, the heart of the night, the crossroads of the night: The Milky Way, pathway, return, capture, take prisoner (for those who do not make the safe crossing), seventh (perhaps as in dispensation), sit down, strike (like a bell), and the Golden Mean. The wikipedia gives both mathematical definitions for the Golden Mean which boil down to finding the middle between two extremes. Among their philosophical definitions is the following:
The earliest representation of this [the Golden Mean] idea in culture is probably in the mythological Cretan tale of Daedalus and Icarus. Daedalus, a famous artist of his time, built feathered wings for himself and his son so that they might escape the clutches of King Minos . Daedalus warns his son to "fly the middle course", between the sea spray and the sun's heat. Icarus did not heed his father; he flew up and up until the sun melted the wax of his wings, and he fell to his death.6
The Milky Way was called "one that awaits the Dawn". This term will be familiar to fantasy readers because the genre is filled with these esoteric ideas. The Pueblo Native Americans believed the Milky Way to be the center of the universe. They believed the Milky Way would appear in the east and get brighter as dawn approaches. It is responsible for ending the night and beginning another day. This is the time when the creator makes the most abundant and sacred blessings, but only if the people ask for those blessings.
At midnight, the moment before a new day begins, everything is still and dark. Native Americans describe it as when the world has stopped whirling thru space. The singing stops and it is neither night nor day. This is the heart of time.7 We do not believe the Second Coming will come at the start of the new age. Doctrine and Covenants, section 77:13 tells us that there are significant events to take place after the opening of the seventh seal, and before the coming of the Lord.
"The Cross" was another term the Mayans used for this future event.
And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me, that as I have been lifted up by men even so should men be lifted up by the Father, to stand before me, to be judged of their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil - And for this cause have I been lifted up; therefore, according to the power of the Father I will draw all men unto me, that they may be judged according to their works.
This earth follows a similar pattern to salvation that we do. She will come to her last crossroad near the end of the Millennium. The Mayans 'dark river' through the middle of the Milky Way, could be earth's last challenge, perhaps the battle of Gog and Magog,8 before the earth will pass through the veil of the Milky Way.
The last name the Mayans used for the elliptic crossing of 2012 was "The Tree of Life":
And it came to pass that I beheld that the rod of iron, which my father had seen, was the word of God, which led to the fountain of living waters, or to the tree of life; which waters are a representation of the love of God; and I also beheld that the tree of life was a representation of the love of God.
This brings us to the connection with Aquarius. Nephi equated The Tree of Life with the fountain of water. They both symbolize the same thing, the love of God. In both Into the Wilderness and Out of the Wilderness, we wrote about the waters of knowledge to be poured out upon the earth. The Winter Solstice of 2012, fits a myriad of criteria, scientifically, scripturally, and mythological. It is only fair to note that not all scientists agree with the calculations of the Mayans. There is wide spread speculation about what this all means and we should warn our reader that this is a very popular topic among New Age believers. They believe the earth will reach a higher astral plain and some believe only those prepared will make the change.
Aquarius
It wasn't just a song. With the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, many eyes from many cultures will be watching to see what events unfold. Perhaps this clears up where the term "New Age Religion" comes from. So, what is the difference between what they believe and LDS beliefs? Among a myriad of differences, we believe there is a true priesthood and a false priesthood. We believe Christ is the only way to be redeemed, and not through humanism (the belief that man is the only god and can save himself). We believe the scriptures which teach us that the water of life will pour from the Savior to His people. Wrath will also be poured out without measure. The priests of Baal get the first turn because the current king of the world (a definite Ahab figure) has dominion. Amos saw the end times and warns of the coming darkness, as well as the rejection of the sacrifice of the wicked:
Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! To what end is it for you? The day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.
As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?
I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.
Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts. Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.
But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
In the beginning of the age of Taurus, Adam and Eve came to earth during a time of the upheaval of nature. The Age of Aries began at the time of Abraham. With the turning of the age came tremendous destruction. Nibley writes at length about the raging storms and floods, the blasting heat and famine, earthquakes and despair that accompanied Abraham's era.9 Also, we are familiar with the tremendous upheavals in nature (especially in the western hemisphere) near the beginning of the time of Pisces, when the Son of God was killed. It is doubtful that exact timing of events can be predicted with the turning of ages, but general caution would seem prudent. Simply following the prophet's council would be the answer.
How many times do we hear it is blind faith to follow the prophet? On this earth, where the mists of darkness prevail, blindness would be ignoring the shepherd's guiding voice. The voice of the good shepherd calls us up where the air is clear and the view enlightening, the temple. That watch tower will become ever more important and our personal study of the symbols, if prayerfully pondered, will lead us up that mountain. When we are at our crossroads in the valley of the shadow of death, his rod and staff will protect us during the crossing, and His atonement appeases the demand of blood payment for passage. His voice leads us to the light above where we can feed in green pastures and partake of still waters. The stone has already been cut without hands from granite mountains. The time of Aquarius, as we demonstrated in Out of the Wilderness, will be the era when the Lord pours down spiritual water to fill those channels that metaphorically pour out from the temples to the four quarters of the earth.
Brother Nibley shared his feelings about the symbols of the temple:
Physical preparations have been discussed for years as well as spiritual. We follow the counsel of the First Presidency and the Twelve. Following is a powerful quote from Elder Bruce R. McConkie:
We believe that nothing can bring as much power into our lives as prayer and the daily reading of the Book of Mormon. Even while reading other scripture, we feel a tremendous difference in our lives if we read at least some out of the Book of Mormon also. The spirit that book brings will enable those who keep its precepts to gain the spiritual knowledge necessary to stand in holy places, thereby building a bowery of safety, even of joy as the great events of the last days play out. As we deeply sup of this book, we will be prepared for further knowledge and understanding, even for the sealed portions of scripture. Perhaps, for those prepared, the Spirit can whisper some of those truths contained within the sealed portions to those with ears to hear. As we sanctify ourselves we can receive that water of knowledge so we can be blessed and bless the lives of others: "And ye are to be taught from on high. Sanctify yourselves and ye shall be endowed with power, that ye may give even as I have spoken.10
Conclusion
When metaphorically, the artificial Christmas lights go out through the outpouring of wrath, there will be a city set on a hill to give light in the darkness. Those hearts lit by the finger of God will be the lights on the evergreen boughs of the booths during the gathering of the harvest for the Feast of the Tabernacles. Those who have partaken of the fruit and become Trees of Life, must wave their branches high. Illuminated as a star in the crown of the Lord, these people will light the way for the weary traveler who has left Babylon and is wandering in the desert. They will die without help so the children of Abraham, father of lights, must bear witness of where they can come to receive the waters of life, the pool of Siloam.11 Our work is to build the bowery, a shelter from the storm, and to be the lights that adorn those beautiful evergreen bows. When the real Feast of the Tabernacles comes, our harvest will be saved. We can be a part of that oasis in the desert; lifting our ancestors, our children and our brothers and sisters onto our shoulders and carrying them to spiritual places of safety. (Isaiah 42:6, covenant to be a light to the Gentiles. 49:6. 60:1-3-19).
The Savior is standing with outstretched arms, calling us to Him for protection . "as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings."12 This does not mean we will not face trials, but we can be certain that if He is in charge, then what happens will turn out all right in the long run. This is no time to meander in the wilderness. Only when we go through the gate referred to in the verse below, will we reverse the effects of the fall in our lives and get on that narrow and straight course to Christ. He is the gate, and He alone can light the oil we must bring.
Sooner or later the day will come when no man can live on borrowed light. When the darkness begins to descend, our spiritual shelters of safety need to already be lit. A fire brightly kindled may draw those lost sheep we love to the warmth of our hearth in time to save them. There will be other lights beckoning in the coming night, the campfires of the enemy. The light from that source is stark and glaring, like a bare bulb in a cold room, and will bring neither warmth nor peace.
Following the example of a brave military leader from the Book of Mormon can help us prepare for the events President Hinckley was referring to. There was a period when Captain Moroni and the Nephites knew it was only a matter of time until the Lamanites returned to continue the long war. Amalickiah had promised to drink Moroni 's blood.13 This short time of peace was just a lull in the storm. The Nephites had prepared their places of safety, but in the meantime, they were living their lives to the fullest and prospering. They did not know when the Lamanites would come any more than we know when prophesied events will occur, but they took the portents seriously. Moroni 's armies were increasing daily and the people were keeping the commandments. In fact, "there never was a happier time among the people of Nephi, since the days of Nephi, than in the days of Moroni ."14 How could they be so happy after so much carnage and death with future battles looming? Perhaps it was because " Moroni had kept the commandments of God in preparing for the safety of his people".15 It may be that when there is a unity of heart, combined with an eye single to God, that even in dangerous circumstances, it can be a time of peace, a time of joy.
President Hinckley is almost always full of good cheer and hope, even when he raises a warning voice. We can take heart from the Jaredites, who, in their sealed ship, amidst great storms and monsters of the sea, sang praises to their God and looked forward to the time when they would reach the other shore. Also, we have heard Brigham Young's statement about food storage one day being as important as the Ark was to Noah. Noah also needed pure water and light. He received fresh water which poured from the skies, but where did he get his light? Many Jewish scholars believed that the word 'Zohar' means "rare light."16 The stories say that Noah was commanded to make a precious stone "which hung in the midst of the Ark, which gave light to all living creatures therein, this the greatest carbuncle could not do, nor any precious stone that is only natural."17 Where are those precious lights for our arks; our bubbles of safety against the times of trial? They can be us if we stand in that Holy Place, a conduit for both light and water!
Joseph Smith encouraged the embattled Saints of his day to have courage and even to rejoice in the midst of trial. He knew when we came to the crossroad of our test, that a way for escape had already been effected. Using the type and shadow of the Caduceus, if we take the right path, we are birthed from the mouth of the plumed serpent who has wings to lift us aloft. If we choose the left path, we are birthed from the mouth of the enemy of mankind and the fall is great.18 He who has current dominion over this earth must give up his prisoners when the atonement is applied, both for the living and the dead. Joseph Smith's hope can be our hope:

Sister Anderson shares the following insights relating to the subject of her poem:
The four acres atop the Conference Center in Salt Lake City are planted with various evergreens, mountain wild flowers, and 21 types of native mountain grasses. Water from a rooftop fountain falls 67 feet down the front of the Conference Center .
Isaiah 41:17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. 18 I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.

Mayan Calendar Ends
The Mayans, who have correctly calculated major astronomical events in their long count calendar, predicted a massive increase in solar flares leading up to 2012, Dec. 21st. They also pinpointed May 5, 2000 as the end of the fifth sun and birth of the sixth sun. Aside from lots of speculation, we don't know what they meant by that but it is interesting how much the solar flares have been increasing the last few years. Their long count calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012. Many feel that it marks the end of time but a new time will begin. They accurately mapped that date for the conjunction of the sun's elliptic path with the horizontal dark path (space dust darkens the stars along that path) that runs through the center of the Milky Way. The Mayans were very scientific in their methods. For instance, they calculated the lunar synodic cycle to be 29.53086 days. Modern science corrects the number to 29.53059 days. They believed the gravitational pull of the sun, moon and 5 major planets effect the earth. This is an ancient belief widely held and why the days of the week are named from those seven bodies. The moon's effects on liquid are obvious. Maybe the others play more of a role than we know. The Mayans believed the earth's energy will decline as it nears and hits 2012, then burst forth in a new cycle. During both solstices, the sun appears to stand still for a few days and then begins rapid movement. The subtlety of the energy grid is hard to grasp or calculate. It shows the peak at 2000 that correlates with the Mayan's new sun and even though we are in a trough now, I find it interesting that since then, astronomers say some of the coronal ejections we are getting are monsters.
Sunspot Cycles; Adrian Gilbert and Maurice Cotterell, in their book the Mayan Prophecies, say that the end of the Great Cycle is the culmination of a series of long-term sunspot cycles which will flip the sun's magnetic field, causing earthquakes and flooding on earth..generally speaking, scientifically accepted records of sunspot activity do seem to be heading for a climax in the near future.

Note: Real science is predicting the next/current sun cycle to be the worst in 50 years. The first two sunspots of 2006 moved in reverse direction. August 15, 2006: On July 31st, a tiny sunspot was born. It popped up from the sun's interior, floated around a bit, and vanished again in a few hours. On the sun this sort of thing happens all the time and, ordinarily, it wouldn't be worth mentioning. But this sunspot was special: It was backward. "We've been waiting for this," says David Hathaway, a solar physicist at the Marshall Space Flight in Huntsville , Alabama . "A backward sunspot is a sign that the next solar cycle is beginning."

"Backward" means magnetically backward. Hathaway explains:
Sunspots are planet-sized magnets created by the sun's inner magnetic dynamo. Like all magnets in the Universe, sunspots have north (N) and south (S) magnetic poles. The sunspot of July 31st popped up at solar longitude 65o W, latitude 13o S. Sunspots in that area are normally oriented N-S. The newcomer, however, was S-N, opposite the norm. This tiny spot of backwardness matters because of what it might foretell: A really big solar cycle. Solar activity rises and falls in 11-year cycles, swinging back and forth between times of quiet and storminess. Right now the sun is quiet. "We're near the end of Solar Cycle 23, which peaked way back in 2001," explains Hathaway. The next cycle, Solar Cycle 24, should begin "any time now," returning the sun to a stormy state.
Satellite operators and NASA mission planners are bracing for this next solar cycle because it is expected to be exceptionally stormy, perhaps the stormiest in decades. Sunspots and solar flares will return in abundance, producing bright auroras on Earth and dangerous proton storms in space.
But when will Solar Cycle 24 begin?
"Maybe it already did-on July 31st," says Hathaway. The first spot of a new solar cycle is always backwards. Solar physicists have long known that sunspot magnetic fields reverse polarity from cycle to cycle. N-S becomes S-N and vice versa. "The backward sunspot may be the first sunspot of Cycle 24."
The Solar System
There is fascinating information out of Russia , from the Russian National Academy of Science in Siberia , where scientists have come to the conclusion that we have moved into an area of space that is different and has a much higher energy level.
The Russians are reporting changes that are being recorded in space that have never been seen before. We cannot verify this information "for certain," but we do know that the scientific body reporting it is real, and that a Dr. Dmitriev does head this body. Also, I have personally been before the Russian National Academy of Science, in Moscow .
Speaking for the Academy in Siberia , Dr. Dmitriev says that the effects reported below have been observed (these are not quotes from Dr. Dmitriev, but extracts from his report).
Changes to the Leading Edge of the Heliosphere
The Sun itself has a magnetic field, and that magnetic field creates an "egg" around the Solar System that is known as the "heliosphere." The heliosphere is shaped like a teardrop, with the long, thin end of the drop pointing away from the direction in which we're traveling.
The Russians have looked at the leading edge of this heliosphere, and they have observed glowing, excited plasma energy there. The Sun´s heliosphere used to be 10 astronomical units deep (an astronomical unit is the distance from the Earth to the Sun, approximately 93 million miles) - 10 astronomical units was the "normal" thickness of this glowing energy that we used to see at the front end of the Solar System.
Today, Dr. Dmitriev says that this glowing energy is now 100 astronomical units deep.
The Russian National Academy of Sciences doesn't give us a time-line, but the change from what was known and accepted to the way it is now represents a 1000 percent increase.
And the Russians say that this change in the Sun is changing how the planets function and what kind of life they could support. They even report - but don't explain - that the DNA spiral itself is altering. They feel that the continued expansion of the heliosphere will eventually take us into a new level of energy, that there will probably be a sudden expansion of the basic harmonic wavelengths that the Sun emits as it radiates energy out of itself, and that this increase in energy emission will change the basic nature of all matter in the Solar System.
That´s a pretty bold statement, but it´s followed by data to back it up:
The atmospheres of five of the planets and the Earth´s moon are changing.
When the United States landed on the moon in 1969, it found no atmosphere. Since then, the earth's moon is growing an atmosphere that wasn´t there before, made up of a compound that Dr. Dmitriev refers to as "Natrium." This new atmosphere is now 6,000 kilometers deep.
This article also quotes Dr. Mike Lockwood of Rutherford Appleton National Laboratories who says that since 1901 the sun is 230 percent stronger.
Lots of scientists would refute the article in Nature just as there is such disagreement on global warming. You are right that the source is important but when you get respected experts disagreeing, then it gets difficult. The following quote is hearsay but I have heard too much about NASA hiding info to toss it out without consideration:
"The solar activity during this last sunspot cycle was greater than anything ever seen before. Yet every astronomer that I talked to about this except one insisted that everything was "normal." That one person, who worked at NASA, claimed that what was going on within the Sun was absolutely incredible. She also said that she was not "allowed" to talk about it. But she talked anyway, because she felt that the world needed to know, but at the same time she asked that I not publicly discuss what she had said."
There is a lot of work being done in Quantum Mechanics that discuss harmonics in relation to our solar system. The string theory is accepted by most experts as being probable. They state that gravity is one of the harmonic frequencies that amounts to mass. If you accelerate that mass by adding more energy, the amplitude of that harmonics increases and so its gravity increases. So the increase in energy we are observing from the sun does have an effect on bodies in the solar system just as the Russian scientists observed. Frequency is proportional to energy and even NASA admits that earth's frequency has increased in recent years. There is a lot going on out there and the string theory opens a whole world of understanding. This energy fluctuation could have a major impact on both DNA and RNA as Dr. Dmitriev asserts.

The addition of RNA is my own but the assertion of Quantum Mechanics String Theory is that frequency is proportional to energy. The whole solar system is increasing in frequency which is not theory but scientifically measurable. According to the String Theory, this would impact all matter, including DNA and RNA, thus viruses.
"What determines the type of particle is the movement of the string and the energy associated with this movement. According to Einstein's famous equation E=mc2, energy and mass are equivalent-that is, the more energy something contains, the more mass it has, and vice versa. In string theory, this equivalence accounts for the different masses of different particles: a lower-energy string is lighter (less massive) than a higher-energy string." This would easily explain the findings by the Russians.
